Battling for Titles — Swim & Dive Team Wins Region; Wrestlers Qualify 11 on Way to Region Second

Swimming & Diving

Congratulations to head coach Kelly Horrell, moderator Mr. Wayne Kraus and the Rocks.

The team took home the Fifth Region championship, narrowly getting past runner-up Louisville Collegiate.

Taylor Owen was second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 500 free; Michael Fisher was second in one-meter diving; and Luke Bunnell was fourth in the 100 backstroke.

The top scorer for the Rocks was Hunter Tapp, who placed first in both the 50 and the 100 free, setting a new regional record in the 50 free in the process. Tapp was also named to the All-Region team.

Horrell was named region Coach of the Year.  Next stop for the Rocks, the state meet at UL on Feb. 25 – 27.

Wrestling

The Rocks placed second in the Fourth Region meet at Atherton High School, winning four individual championships — Keegan Duncan (132), Ben Barton (152), Hudson Heidorf (160) and Cole Spencer (heavyweight) — and qualifying an additional seven other wrestlers for the state meet this coming weekend in Lexington (Tyker Frankrone, Andrew Pritchett, Kadin Kulmer, Zach Taylor, Matt Kostecki, Darius Maldonado and Ian Roberts).

Additionally, head coach Eddie Rudolph was named the Fourth Region Coach of the Year.

  • Trinity JV wrestlers participated in their Regional JV tournament and 12 qualified for the JV State. After a long day of wrestling on Saturday, several Trinity Wresters came away with medals. The following placed at the JV State Tournament:
  • JV State Champs: junior Daniel Langford (182) and Sophomore Cody Auxier (heavyweight)

Second place at 106 – freshman Keeandre Sides-Johnson

Third place at 126 – sophomore Jaylen Hamilton

Third place at 138 – freshman John Michael Gaudin

Third place at 145 – junior Matt Smith

Third place at 170 – junior Noah Kulmer

Fourth place at 138 – freshman Grant Smith

Ice Hockey

The Rocks won a tournament championship this past weekend in Cleveland, Ohio, winning four matches and claiming the prestigious Presidents Day Holiday Tournament trophy.

Basketball

The Rocks swept all four games this weekend, with the JV and varsity beating Lexington Lafayette at home on Friday and defeating Owensboro on the road on Saturday.

Bowling

The Bowling Rocks fell in the KHSAA State Bowling Sweet 16, held in Lexington, falling 3-2 to No. 2-seed Apollo in the first round.

Thanks to head coach Joe Fowler and the bowling Rocks for a strong 2015-16 bowling season.

* Prior to state, the bowlers finished second in the Fourth Region Tournament. After defeating Male and St. Xavier, the Rocks fell in the finals to a red-hot Ballard team (198-201, 207-190, 221-172, 198-226, and 183-269). The Rocks averaged 200.38 for the 13 Baker games, with 84 strikes in 143 attempts for a 58.7 percentage.

Archery

The Trinity/Mercy archery team took second place in the NASP Regional Tournament, earning a spot in the State Tournament in March. Out of 229 archers, Kyle Sears led the team, taking first place in the High School Boys Division, while junior Patrick Letterle and senior Trey Heichelbech placed fifth and sixth, respectively.  Sophomore Michael McCalpin placed 14th while senior Austin Duncan placed 20th.

Track — Indoor

The track team headed to Lexington to compete against the best in Kentucky at the annual Wildcat Classic. The top scorers for the Rocks:

  • Trinity — first in the 3,200 relay
  • Glavin Swain — second in the 800
  • Tamron Keith — third in the long jump
  • Ahmad Johnson — fourth in the 60
  • Trevor Warren — fifth in the two mile
  • Alex Wilson — fifth in the 200
  • Jacob Burnham — seventh in the mile
  • Ryan Boyle — eighth in the pole vault
  • David Spalding — 12th in the 400

Intramural Ping Pong

The All-Class Elite Eight Ping Pong Tournament qualifiers were Jack Allen, Zack Kelly, Mitchel Ose, Jacob Kalbfleisch, Brandon Chou, Justin Risk, David Gregory and Luke DeLeo.
