Tennis – Rocks sweep Region Seven Tournament Trinity fell to St. Xavier 4-1 on May 2. However, the Rocks regained their form to sweep the Region Seven Tournament at Kentucky Country Day on May 9. In addition to the team title, the Rocks took the individual title with senior Emerson Walsh, knocking off KCD’s Collier Bouchillon, 6-3, 0-6, 10-8. Both Shamrocks teams reached the doubles final. In doubles, Randy Strause and Mustafa Gardezi defeated teammates Austin Strause and Bryce Liston, 6-2, 6-4. The Rocks scored 16 points while KCD had 11. Trinity will advance to the team sectionals Saturday, May 11, against host St. Xavier. Track & Field – Region Four champs The track Rocks won the team title at the Class 3A, Region Four meet, beating runner-up Eastern 160-126. The first two finishers in each event advance to the State 3A meet on May 18 at the University of Louisville. Football Trinity announces 2013 football schedule Trinity, the defending Kentucky Class 6-A football champion, announced its 2013 varsity football schedule. The schedule features games against five 2012 state championship teams — opponents come from five states. This schedule continues that trend. The season kicks off with the annual scrimmage against Fort Thomas Highlands High School (defending Kentucky Class 5-A state champs). The schedule includes the annual rivalry game against cross-town foe St. Xavier High School . A record crowd of nearly 40,000 is expected for the Oct. 4 showdown. Familiar opponents include Cathedral High School (2012 Indiana state champs) and Archbishop Moeller High School (2012 Ohio state champs). Both of these games will be played at Trinity. New opponents for 2013 are Nashville’s Ensworth High School (2012 Tennessee state champions), Indianapolis Lawrence Central High School (2012 Indiana state champions), Carmel High School from Carmel, Ind. (coached by former Trinity head coach Kevin Wright), Colerain High School from Cincinnati and Marist High School from Chicago, Ill. Along with St. X, other district opponents are DuPont Manual High School and Louisville Male High School. This district is considered to be the most competitive in Kentucky. Head coach Bob Beatty H’03 said,“To be considered the best you must play the best. This is as tough a schedule as anyone will play in the country. Our student-athletes will learn lessons about hard work, teamwork, discipline, winning and losing. These lessons are the reasons we have sports as part of the total school mission.” Athletic Director Dennis Lampley H’92 said, “This schedule shows our confidence in the coaching staff and student-athletes. I know that our fans will support the team throughout the entire season, regardless the score at the end of a game. There are big lessons we are teaching through sports. This schedule helps impart those lessons.” The Shamrocks will play this season on their stadium’s new artificial surface, which was installed this past winter. The new surface features the latest advances in turf technology that aim to reduce injuries and increase performance. Ten-game schedules for both the freshman and junior varsity squads are nearing completion. Trinity also announced that it is partnering with Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nev., to schedule a two-year home and home series that would begin in 2014 or 2015. Basketball Two Rocks named to Earl Cox’s, Voice-Tribune Republic Bank All-Metro team Trinity seniors Darryl Hicks and James Quick have been named to Earl Cox’s, Voice-Tribune All-Metro basketball team. Both student-athletes also earned athletic scholarships – Hicks to Boston College and Quick to the University of Louisville where he will play football. LCSN Honors Three Rocks to be honored by Louisville Catholic Sports Network Trinity seniors Sam Allen-Kawa and John Zehnder will receive awards at the third annual Louisville Catholic Sports Awards Night. ECHO staff junior Jake Smith will receive an award for best sports photography. Allen-Kawa will receive the Mulloy Properties Community Service Award. Since 2009, Allen-Kawa has volunteered each summer at Kosair Children’s Hospital as well as working with Special Olympics and other projects. Zehnder will receive the R.G. Stallings Student Manager Award for his four-year dedication to Trinity’s football team. He will continue to serve as a football manager in college at Western Kentucky University next year. In its third year, the Louisville Catholic Sports Network has distributed more than $18,000 in scholarships to student-athletes, managers and students involved in media/sports journalism who attend the local Louisville Catholic high schools. The event will be held on Tuesday, May 14, at Audubon Country Club with WDRB TV Sports Director Tom Lane serving as the emcee and Hall of Fame journalist Billy Reed will speak on the subject of character in sports.
