The speech and debate team finished its regular season competition with much success. Jorge Rojas-Ortega kicked off the trek to state with a second place at the Rotary Club speech contest. The next day all team members competed in the Kentucky High School Speech League state tournament. Sophomore Marck Kiselevach advanced to quarterfinals in novice Lincoln-Douglas debate, while Rojas-Ortega advanced to semifinals before dropping. Rojas-Ortega was the fourth-best speaker, Kiselevach the third-best speaker, and Pedro Sanchez-Villa was the top speaker in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. In novice Public Forum debate, the team of John Moremen and Jared Wilson advanced to semifinals. Moremen was the fifth-best speaker and Wilson was top speaker. In the speech side of the tournament, junior Jeremy Gaines advanced to semifinals in broadcasting, placing him in the top 18 in the state. The team, coached by Ms. Amy Zuccaro, next prepares for nationals in May. * The debate team competed in the Wilson Wyatt Debate League city championship. Rojas-Ortega and Sanchez-Villa advanced to the semifinal round in JV Lincoln-Douglas debate, claiming two of the top four spots in the city. Rojas-Ortega dropped in semis, but Sanchez-Villa advanced to the final round. Sanchez-Villa dropped on a split decision, but is the city runner-up.
