Led by Quick Recall Team, Welch and Borden Firsts, Rocks Second in Governor’s Cup District
February 9, 2016
The Trinity Academic Team competed in Governor’s Cup district play. Going against St. Xavier, Collegiate, Sacred Heart and Walden, the Rocks compete in one of the toughest top-to-bottom districts in the state.
Led by Coach Missy Clay, the Future Problem Solving team of Mark Tierney, Jacob Romines, Travis Liebert and Will Lewis placed second and will advance to regionals.
The Quick Recall team, coached by Mr. Mark Amick, Mr. Parker Whitehouse and Mr. Jason Rand, won the district for the first time since 2011 and only the second time in the last 10 years. The team of captain Jeremy Borden, Evan Welch, Bryant Reynolds and Henry Mullins beat St. X, Walden and Collegiate to set up a championship match with St. X. The team fell behind 5-1 early but never lost their cool and led by nine at the half. They stretched the lead out and won 28-16. That makes Trinity’s varsity record 4-0 against the Tigers this year.
In individual written testing, the following students placed and will advance to regional play:
- Jeremy Borden — District Champion in Science
- Evan Welch – District Champion in Social Studies
- Luke McFarland – Second in Language Arts
- Jack Wolfram – Third in Language Arts
- Alex Arave – Third in Social Studies
- Evan Grimm – Third in Science
- Jeremy Borden – Third in Math
- Braden Barnett – Fourth in Arts & Humanities
- Patrick McCarthy – Fifth in English Composition
Overall, Trinity finished as district runner-up. The Rocks amassed the most points of any THS team since 2007.
- Trinity’s first-ever Academic World-Quest team competed against 15 other teams from across the central Kentucky/southern Indiana region, including the five-time national champion, DuPont Manual. Trinity’s two teams in the event were both wildly successful for year one, with the team of Henry Mullins, Alex Arave and Evan Welch scoring 66 out of 100, placing fifth, only two points from the top three. The all-sophomore team of Luke McFarland, Connor Davis, Eric Bryan and Kyle Cahoe scored 63 out of 100 and placed sixth. The future is bright for these young men, who were easily the youngest group at the competition.
