Twitter. Snapchat. Instagram. Social media has been around for years and has gained popularity among most teens. There are many benefits to social media; however, there are also many negatives.

Trinity sophomore Markus Puhakka said he started using social media in “early middle school.” He said when people overuse social media or use it to send inappropriate pictures to their friends, it can become a problem.

Puhakka, who uses Instagram, said that despite the risks, social media provides benefits. He said, “It’s usually used to make new friends online, have a social life and be happy.”

Sophomore Preston Romanov, who first started noticing social media in the early 2010s, said “Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and Twitter are really the biggest apps.”

Freshman Gannon Crowe, who said he “first started using Instagram around 2015,” finds that overusing social media is a big problem.
