For the fourth time in five years, Trinity’s Academic Team was victorious in District Governor’s Cup competition.

The Rocks defeated  St. Xavier, Collegiate, and Sacred Heart. Prior to 2018, the Rocks had won District only once since 1987 (in ’98).

In quick recall, Trinity beat Collegiate but was soundly defeated by St. X in the quarterfinals. According to team head coach Mr. Mark Amick, the team rebounded and “comfortably dispatched Collegiate, setting up a rematch with St. X. The team of MVP Krish Gupta, Paul Springer, Russell Glass, Anthony Holder, John Kehdy, and Ryan Groza rose to the challenge and avenged the earlier defeat, beating St. X 32-27.”

That set up a final match for District champion in quick recall. The Rocks finished the 80 questions leading 33-31, but an inquiry swung the result in St. X’s favor, and the Tigers won by 2.

Trinity is looking forward to avenging the loss in Region play on Feb. 19. The Rocks have won Region Seven two of the last three years and will have a target on their backs as reigning champions.

Scoring for the Rocks in individual testing were the following:

Krish Gupta – District champ in Arts & Humanities

Anthony Holder – District champ in Language Arts

Paul Springer – District champ in Math

Ryan Groza – second in Math and second in Science

Russell Glass – second in Social Studies

Liam Amick – third in Arts & Humanities

Ethan Brunton – third in Science

Leo McAllister – third in Language Arts

Evan Belcher – fourth in Composition

Amick expressed his congratulations to the team and to fellow coaches Mr. Jason Rand and Mr. Blake Napper.
