Two very musically-talented Trinity teachers, Jason Daniel and Scott Ross, started up the Jam Club this year. Daniel and Ross worked together to turn the guitar club into something more: a club where any musician of any instrument could come and play. The club runs on Tuesdays after school in the music room of the Communication Arts building.
Trinity doesn’t have as many musical clubs as people may expect. We don’t have any band beyond the band class, and also no marching band to play during football games. To allow students to flourish in this realm, Ross wanted to start an after-school club which would be open to more instruments than just the guitar. This ended up becoming the Jam Club. As Daniel put it, “Rather than stepping on each other’s toes or borrowing members from each other’s clubs, why don’t we just combine that with the guitar club?”
This isn’t the sort of club that has super strict practices. It’s more about just jamming out and really enjoying playing music. It doesn’t matter how experienced one is, the club is totally open for any and everyone to just have a good time hanging out and making some tunes. All instruments are allowed. Daniel’s intention is for some people to lay down a baseline and anyone who wants to can “[solo along with it], or maybe they just play a rhythm part.”
Daniel has had a long career playing music and jamming out. He started taking piano lessons when he was 12, but even before then he grew up in a very musical household. Music had always been a key part of him. When he got to college, he picked up the guitar and found something he was very talented at. He went very seriously into music for a while, joining a cover band called Mother Patch, playing primarily classic rock. Since then, he has started playing a bit less. However, he still performs all around Louisville. Music really is one of his passions He performs as part of a cover band around Louisville. They play classic rock music, such as Jimi Hendrix or Soundgarden.
With decades of musical experience behind Trinity’s latest musical club, it seems like a very promising start to our Jam Club. If you play an instrument, head on down! Daniel makes it clear that the point of music isn’t “to just sit in your bedroom and play.” It’s to share your song with the world around you.
