After a great season of soccer going 19-1 in the regular season, senior center back Vincent Ivey sat with the ECHO for a Q&A.
ECHO: When did you start playing soccer?
Ivey: “I started playing soccer when I was about four to five years old at the YMCA”
Have you always been on defense?
Ivey: “I haven’t always been a center back, but I used to play midfield, but as I got older and got bigger, I was just put at center back, because coaches thought it was a good idea to put the big guy on everybody.”
Do you have any future plans with soccer?
Ivey: “I do, I’m still looking to play in college. I’ve got a couple schools that I’m looking at and talking to, which is exciting, but I’m also looking to study biology in college, which is going to be a really fun path for me because I’ve always enjoyed it since freshman year.”
What are some of the colleges that you’re talking to?
Ivey: “My biggest school that I’m talking to right now is Northern Kentucky University. I got to go up there and see the players, train with them, and talk to the coaches. I’m also looking at Eastern Tennessee University, which has a lot of great schools they play against.”
How has the leadership over the years impacted you as a player?
Ivey: “100%. Last year, especially when I was a junior, our team had a lot of seniors on it. And I think watching them kind of lead the team and show to us that they really want to win had kind of rubbed off on me because when I became a senior, I was like, this is my last year. I have got to try to do everything I can with it.”
Do you have someone that inspired/inspires you to play and why?
Ivey: “As soon as I was basically born, I was just watching soccer with my dad. My mom will inspire me as well because she’ll push me too, but it’s always been my dad. He’s always been there, just behind me, giving me that push. My grandpa used to play in England and a little bit in Spain, and he’s always pushed me. Whenever we talk about soccer, he’ll always help me because we’ve played similar positions, and he’ll tell me kind of his journey and all that. It really inspires me.”
The Trinity Soccer Rocks’ season came to a heartbreaking close after a tough match against St. X on Oct. 13. Congratulations to Ivey and the rest of the team on a great season.
