The Northern Lights. Aurora Borealis. Polar Lights. Whatever you call them, they are a beautiful spectacle that many people will only see a few times or even once in their lifetime. Over the course of 2024, we were blessed with two magnificent opportunities to witness this show in the sky due to a strong solar storm in the middle of May that created the largest aurora borealis show in the past 20 years. In the middle of October, the northern lights were prominent again, this time due to a severe geomagnetic storm which made the lights visible to the naked human eye for the second time in 2024.
I had the pleasure of being able to view these lights in coastal Maine during the October geomagnetic storm. However, the Nothern Lights were not only visible in Maine, but rather all around the country as seen below in the compilation of photos captured by high schoolers.
