Trinity’s archery season is now in full swing as the team begins participating in tournaments. In preparation for these tournaments, the team has been putting their all into their weekly practices, something that is crucial since, according to coach Joe Raymond, Trinity is “… in the toughest region in the state.” While Trinity’s archery team is facing a fierce competition this season, Raymond emphasizes the importance of taking things slowly. “We just kind of take things a week at a time… a round at a time and an arrow at a time.”
For anyone interested in archery but who may be concerned about their lack of experience or skill, don’t worry. Anyone, of any skill level, can join the team. As Raymond said, “You can be 100% new and be fine. We will take anybody who, whether or not you were born with a bow in your hand, or you’ve never seen a bow and arrow before in your life. So, we’re open to anybody and we’re just happy to teach the sport.”
On top of this, the archery team doesn’t require as massive time commitment as some other sports here at Trinity. There’s only around one practice per week and one to two tournaments a week. As for what happens during practices or tournaments, according to Coach Raymond, “…our practices consist of about an hour and a half. We have 15 minutes [of] set up or tear down time. And then we will warm up using some TheraBands and some different techniques that we have been working on and employing this year. And then we’ll just get into some basic teaching for what we’re trying to learn that day, to some of the points of emphasis. And then we’ll just shoot for an hour.” Additionally, there are four coaches who will work with each archer individually. As for tournaments, same thing: the team shows up, shoots, and then go home.
On top of having a highly dedicated roster of archers, the team is being guided by multiple excellent coaches. Coach Raymond, for example, has been an archer his entire life, and has been coaching archery for several years. Coach Raymond, as well as the other archery coaches, are dedicated to making Trinity’s archery program as great as it can be, and “… to bring on as many people as we can…” So, if you’ve ever been interested in archery, even if you’ve never held a bow in your life, consider joining Trinity’s archery team. Good luck in the season, Archery Rocks!
