With the McCaullie scrimmage in the rearview mirror and the Rocks playing their home opener tonight, lacrosse season is finally here. After a dominant 2024 season holding a record of 18-1 and winning their seventh KSLL Championship, the Lacrosse Rocks look to continue their 17-game winning streak and win the first ever KHSAA State Championship.
Lacrosse Rock head coach Pete Schroeder met with the ECHO staff to talk about the upcoming season. When asked what Schroeder is most excited for this season, he reponded, “I like the idea of the challenge. I want to see what the ceiling is for this group and what this group can accomplish and overcome.” With nine out-of-state opponents on this year’s schedule, the Rocks are surely going to be challenged; however, the one thing that might be hardest to overcome for this team is moving on from past success. “Last year was great but we must let it go. We have a lot of work in front of us and must be forward thinking.”
The 2025 Lacrosse Rocks have seven returning starters from last season and hope to continue to build their team chemistry this year. The team’s focus isn’t just on their production but also the mental side of the game. Schroeder has made a continued effort over the last few years to integrate ways of focusing his players mentally so that they can compete at the highest level possible and continue the legacy of success from past teams.
For the first time in Lacrosse’s history, it is now a sanctioned KHSAA sport. This means that instead of having a KSLL and CLL league there is now one statewide league. Even with this new change Schroeder and the Lacrosse staff still push to have one of the most challenging schedules in the state. The Rocks with take on nationally-ranked opponents this year including #15 in the country WRA (Western Reserve Academy), #4 in the Midwest Cincinnati St. Xavier, #8 in southern region Buford Highschool, and many other highly acclaimed lacrosse programs around the state and country.
Schroeder is confident and excited for the upcoming challenging schedule. “We feel like the challenging schedule suits us a lot better than just playing teams that give us a false sense of who we are. Playing the the challenging schedule lets us know who we are and who we are not and what we need to work on goings forward.” When making the schedule, Schroeder looks for games that will challenge the team and push them to the edge of their comfort zone, because like Schroeder said, “Outside of the comfort zone is where we grow and get better.”
Whether that is through a challenging schedule to prepare them for potential adversity later in the season or taking an inner look and focusing on self-improvement, the Lacrosse Rocks have one goal in mind going into the 2025 season: holding the first ever KHSAA Lacrosse State Championship trophy up at the end of May.
