Trinity has students who are interested in sports, cooking and an amazing assortment of other activities.
Senior Nick Miller has taken activities to a new level — the jaws of an alligator.
When thinking of exciting places to vacation, Alamosa, Colo., may not come to mind. However, when Miller went to Alamosa on a family trip, he found an unusual way to pass the time.
Miller said, “When I went to Alamosa, my family and I passed by a sign that said, ‘Alligator wrestling at Colorado Alligators!’ We were interested, so we went in, and about one day later, my family and I were wrestling alligators.”
When asked about the preparation required to alligator wrestle, Miller smiled and laughed as he said, “You have to take a five-hour class, which can be pretty painful and boring at times. But by the end of that day, you’re wrestling gators.”
Some people might think that alligator wrestling is cruel to alligators, but it is quite the opposite. Alligators that partake in the wrestling are actually injured, and the entire purpose of alligator wrestling is to subdue the alligators long enough to treat their injuries.
Alligator wrestling is not as dangerous to humans at it may seem. Only two people have been significantly injured during the past five years at Colorado Alligators, according to their website.
The wrestling classes are rather inexpensive, as well — just $100 including the five-hour class and a full day of wrestling alligators.
Wrestlers start out wrestling small alligators and gradually move their way up to larger ones. Miller said, “It’s actually more technique than strength. You go behind the gators and grab behind their neck, without hesitation. Then, you grab the back of their tail and try to subdue them.”
Miller said his mother was willing to let him partake in the alligator wrestling.
“She was skeptical at first,” he said. “But once she saw the statistics and how well supervised the wrestlers are, she was much more willing. Although, I do have to say that I was really surprised when she let me wrestle an alligator. By the end of it, I was trying to get her to do it.”
After Miller’s experience, is an Alligator Wrestling Club next for Trinity?
