Colors, funny hats, people preaching the word, millions — maybe TRILLIONS — of tradeable items, many games to participate in and people who could impact your life. The National Catholic Youth Conference is not like every other assembly — many say it’s the best of all.
The NCYC has been held in many cities, among them Columbus and Houston. This year it was held in late November in Indianapolis, with most of the conference taking place in Lucas Oil Stadium — that’s right, the home of the Indianapolis’ Colts. The next time NCYC will happen is November 2015. Those in college at that time can attend the National Catholic Collegiate Conference.
“It’s awesome when you have 28,000 people to celebrate,” Louisville youth minister Dave Neeson said.
Neeson is the minister for the parishes Incarnation and St. Paul, two parishes that joined to create a youth group.
Neeson said, “The ‘dorkier’ you are at NCYC, the cooler you are,” referring to acquiring attention-getting items you may or may not be able to trade.
“There’s power in a large gathering of a young church,” Neeson said. “In my opinion, it’s the best thing for the church to offer to young people each day.”
Garrett Velez, one of the animators, said, “Being on stage was the most majestic, most holy…visit to a greater being.”
Asked what he gained from the conference, Velez cited “the experience of performing and personal being, the richness of my wisdom and strength.”
Mississippi native Tiffani Wilson said, ”I got a lot out of NCYC. It was so amazing. I got closer to people I haven’t talked to in six years and closer to people I just met. It was an amazing experience, and I’m going back in 2015.”
Trinity junior Joe Powers said he “gained wisdom. I also met new friends, found spiritual relationships that were built with God, and it has strengthened me.”
One last look at Lucas Oil. An experience to remember. “Be Christ to others,” Neeson said. “Take the leadership and do it.”
