Jazz band and choir bring Christmas to THS
The Trinity choir and jazz band performed Dec. 13 and 15. Good crowds attended both shows and were treated to a mix of traditional favorites combined with students’ creative improvisations. Choir and band director Mr. Scott Ross thanked the musicians, singers and accompanist Mr. Carlos Cuenca.
Max Brown ’14 speaks to Flaget alumni
Trinity senior Max Brown spoke to the Flaget Alumni Association on Dec. 11, expressing his appreciation for the association’s annual scholarships to area Catholic high schools. Brown was Trinity’s 2012 recipient of a $1,500 tuition check for this school year.
In his remarks, Brown told the group that the assistance had made a real difference in his life. He said he was especially impressed by the giving attitude of the group and hopes he can return such gifts after college by becoming a teacher. Brown shared a table with Principal Dan Zoeller H’07 and the fathers of Trinity teachers John Baldwin ’87 and Jeff Becker ’90.
Sophomore Nick Washle earned the Flaget Scholarship for this year.
Speech and debate team ninth and Dyar wins in Best of Both Worlds
The speech and debate team travelled to KCD to compete in the Best of Both Worlds Tournament. Senior Jackson Rice took sixth in Broadcasting, and junior John Paul Dyar was the tournament champion in Broadcasting.
Sophomore Jorge Rojas-Ortega claimed seventh in Impromptu Speaking and fifth in Extemporaneous Speaking.
With the support of team members Pedro Sanchez-Villa, Ryan Warner, John Moremen, Jeremy Gaines and Carl Grief, the team, led by coach Amy Zuccaro, claimed ninth in overall sweepstakes. With these wins, Rice and Dyar join the members of the team who are pre-qualified for the state tournament in March.
Quick recall Rocks show no Mercy
The quick recall Rocks played Mercy in league action. The varsity team sought revenge, having lost to Mercy three weeks prior at a tournament in Lexington. Seniors Max Brown and Eric Elder answered the bell and led the Rocks to a dominating 17-4 halftime lead en route to a 27-17 win. Others who made noticeable contributions were Chris Collins, Ben Baughman and Nathan Larch.
The JV team won 30-17. Coach Bob Korte praised the team for their effort.
Varsity basketball Rocks 3-0
The varsity basketball Rocks ran their record to 3-0 with two road victories. The team traveled to Corbin, Ky., to take on the Corbin Redhounds. After sprinting out to a solid first-half lead, Jay Murphy’s 14 points helped Trinity to finish off their opponents by a final score of 69-37.
The team then traveled to Frankfort to take on top-15-ranked Henry Clay. The Rocks used a strong defensive and rebounding effort to race out to a 30-15 halftime lead. After a brief letup in the second half, Henry Clay snuck back into the game, cutting the lead to three points.
Raymond Spalding’s triple-double effort of 21 points, 16 rebounds and 10 blocks helped seal the victory as Trinity came away with a 58-50 win.
Justin Bird ’17 state champion in cyclocross
Trinity freshman Justin Bird won the Promotion Cross cyclocross race (boys’ 15-18 division) in freezing rain in Lexington Dec. 8, claiming the Kentucky state championship in his age group. Bird traveled to Indianapolis last weekend for the season’s final race. In January he will compete in the national championship meet in Boulder, Colo. Road season starts in February. Bird will be riding for a regional development team, ProChain Cycling, out of Cincinnati.
Tommy McConville ’16 honored by U.S. Tennis Association
Trinity sophomore Tommy McConville was awarded the Kentucky-United States Tennis Association (KY-USTA) Mark Ragland Boys Sportsmanship Award of the Year for 2013. The award was presented during the annual KY-USTA banquet, held at the Galt House Hotel & Suites.
