Man of the Month goes to Flannan freshman
The Flannan House Man of the Month for February is freshman Luke McKean. Luke was nominated by his House director, Mr. Alan Wilson and his adviser Mr. John Kahl.
Kahl describes McKean as dedicated to doing well. McKean recently found a wallet in the hallway and immediately turned it over to Kahl. He also recently received the Horizon Award from the cross country coaching staff. The award is given to an athlete for whom the coaches believe greatness awaits.
Academic team second in Governor’s Cup district; Dennis wins in Social Studies
Competing in the Governor’s Cup 25th District against St. Xavier, Collegiate and Sacred Heart, the Rocks placed second overall.
The Future Problem Solving team of Max Brown, Adam Brown, Mark Tierney, and Michael Sandell and coached by Ms. Missy Clay, finished second and will advance to the regional.
The Quick Recall Team beat Sacred Heart, lost to St. X, then rallied to overcome a 14-point halftime deficit against Collegiate, but fell short, losing by 4. Seniors Max Brown and Eric Elder were recognized by their coaches for their effort and leadership.
Placing in individual testing and advancing to the regional are Matthew Dennis (Social Studies, 1st), Elder (Arts and Humanities, 2nd), Chris Collins (Science, 3rd), Elder (Language Arts, 5th), Collins (Math, 5th), Mark Hines (Composition, 2nd), Daniel McCarthy (Composition, 3rd) and Brown (Social Studies, 5th). This is the first time since 2007 that Trinity has placed a student in every category of written competition.
Speech team 10th in Speak of the Devil Invitational
The Speech and Debate Rocks traveled to Lexington Feb. 1 to compete in the University of Kentucky’s Bluegrass Classic and Henry Clay’s Speak of the Devil Invitational.
In the Bluegrass Classic, sophomore Jorge Rojas-Ortega took sixth in Impromptu Speaking.
The Public Forum debate team of seniors John Moremen and Jackson Rice took sixth place in overall debate sweepstakes.
In the Speak of the Devil Invitational, Drew Smith placed sixth in Broadcasting, and Rojas-Ortega placed fourth in Impromptu Speaking.
Strong efforts from team members Brandon Rice, Jeremy Gaines, and Ryan Warner helped the team earn 10th place in overall sweepstakes.
Quick recall team places fourth and second in league tournament
In league tournament play, the varsity quick recall Rocks beat Christian Academy to advance to the semifinals and face St. Xavier The Rocks were down at the half but played St. X even in the second half. The Rocks, however, lost and finished fourth. St. Francis won the varsity tournament.
The JV team of Matthew Gregory, Jeremy Borden, Evan Welch and Jared Cox fared better. They avenged one of two regular-season losses to Sacred Heart in the opening round, then beat St. Francis on an inquiry to advance to the championship against St. Xavier.
The Rocks led at the half but saw St. X take the lead late. Down four, Trinity answered three of the last four questions but ran out of time, losing by one and finishing second in the league.
Rocks raise nearly $900 for Catholic Relief Services
By way of a Dress Down Day in support of Catholic Relief Services, Trinity raised nearly $900 to help those recently affected by natural disasters.

Trinity alum Kyle Bloemer, who is in his third year of medical school at the University of Kentucky, spoke to the Pre-Medical Society about medical school requirements.
