SWIMMING/DIVING

Trinity was the Region Two runner-up to St. Xavier at the Swimming and Diving championships, held at the University of Louisville’s Ralph Wright Natatorium Feb. 15.

The Shamrocks finished second with 275 points despite the absence of their top swimmer, senior Thomas Cooper, who was out with an illness. He could return to swim three relay events during the State Championships, Feb. 27-Mar. 1 at U of L.

Top scorers for the Rocks were Chandler Lichtefeld, who was second in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 200 IM, and Michael Gilligan, who was third in both the 50 and 100 freestyle.

The 200 medley relay — Mac Graven, Lichtefeld, David Bunnell and Chris Parrill — placed third (1:40.68).  The 200 free relay — Chris Owen, Parrill, Graven and Gilligan (1:32.89) — and the 400 free relay — Owen, Gilligan, Bunnell and Lichtefeld (3:16.32) — also scored thirds.

Lichtefeld, who was named to the All-Region team, said, “There was some really nice swimming going on. I feel very blessed and lucky to have performed as well as I did.”

WRESTLING

Led by six champions, Trinity placed second in Region Four to St. Xavier Feb. 15. The following finished first in their respective weight classes: Keegan Duncan (126), Hudson Heidorf (132), Ben Barton (138), Ian Kahl (145), Lucas Miozza (170) and Tyler Frankrone (182).  Others placing in the top four for the Rocks were Danten Rice (120), Tate Smith (195), Landon Carrolla (220) and Ian Roberts (285).

“We had a great outing at regionals,” Duncan said. “If we can keep this momentum up we can be something special.”

BASKETBALL

* The basketball Rocks fell to No. 4 Newport Central Catholic after a hard-fought battle Feb. 18. The Rocks struggled to put the ball in the hoop all night but still relied on their defense to keep them in the game.  Tre Ivory’s three-pointer at the buzzer ultimately made the final score 45-44.  Ivory finished with 15 points and senior Craig Owens finished with 10 as the two were honored in front of a big Senior Night RockNation student section before the game. Ray Spalding gave the Rocks eight rebounds, and Jax Levitch also grabbed six rebounds in the effort.

* The Rocks played host to top-10 Lafayette High School and came away with a 65-54 victory.  This game was a rematch from the King of the Bluegrass earlier this season.  Spalding led the way for Trinity, finishing with 22 points, 12 rebounds, 5 blocks, 5 steals and 5 assists.  Levitch and Daniel Ramser each added 13 points as the Rocks’ defense forced Lafayette into 17 turnovers.

* Trinity clinched the No. 1 seed for the district tournament by knocking off the Seneca Redhawks 63-40.  Holding the Redhawks to just 11 points in the first half, once again Trinity’s stifling defense helped control the pace all night.  Craig Owens’ 19 points led the way as sophomore KelShawn Knight also poured in a career-high 13, including a monstrous two-hand follow-up dunk in the second half.  Ivory was next for the Rocks, dropping eight points as Ramser finished with six points, seven rebounds, four assists and zero turnovers.  Michael Stafford also was big as he grabbed five rebounds from the guard position.

BOWLING

Senior Justin Wiech competed in the KHSAA State Singles Bowling Tournament in Lexington. Wiech shot a respectable three-game series of 585 (195 average) on a day of high scores to finish 20th in the event.

FOOTBALL

Trinity senior Scott Liebert will be a preferred walk-on at Western Kentucky University in the fall. He also had offers from Murray State University, Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Dayton. Liebert played offensive line for Trinity.
