BASKETBALL
* The basketball Rocks captured just the third regional crown in school history by knocking off Ballard 59-58. The Rocks came out sizzling from the start as junior Daniel Ramser knocked down back-to-back-to-back three-pointers to jump on the Bruins 9-2. After a back-and-forth first half, the Rocks entered the second half down one and held the usually high-scoring Bruins to just 24 second-half points.
Trey Ivory, Michael Stafford, Jax Levitch and Gabe Schmitt all hit big shots for the Rocks as Ray Spalding, Christian Thieneman and Craig Owens owned the boards and out-toughed the Bruins all the way down to the last possession to earn the victory and a trip to Rupp Arena as the 7th Region champions. Ivory said, “We played really well against Ballard, and we were fortunate enough to come out with a win. There’s no playing this week. We need to get ready for Owensboro.”
* In the regional semifinals Trinity knocked off the Manual Crimsons 62-45. The Shamrocks owned the boards, out-rebounding Manual by 16, in large part due to Owens, who had 15 rebounds. A blistering fourth quarter highlighted by numerous Spalding dunks helped the Rocks advance to the regional finals for the third consecutive year. Spalding had a career night with 29 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks, while Ramser added nine points. The Rocks defense was once again stout as they held Manual to their lowest point total of the year and just 33 percent shooting.
* The Rocks defeated rival St. Xavier in front a packed house at Bellarmine University 51-40 in what was one of the Rocks’ best outings of the season. Despite the Tigers’ best efforts to keep attacking Trinity on offense, the defense once again prevailed by locking down St. X and out-rebounding them by 17. Owens and Spalding owned the boards for the Rocks, with Owens grabbing seven boards and Spalding adding 13 rebounds and seven blocks.
Ivory was six of eight from the line as he and Spalding were the leading scorers with 13 apiece. Levitch hit three big three-pointers to continue pushing out the Shamrock lead all game. The Rocks also benefitted from the tough defense of Thieneman as he provided a spark off the bench.
POWERLIFTING
The powerlifting Rocks competed in their first meet of the season at the State Push Pull Championships at North Bullitt High School. Several Rocks placed in their divisions with even more setting personal records. Ben Voss is the state champion in the 165-pound class in the JV division.
