The Trinity academic team earned a bit of history Feb. 20.  The quick recall team of Jeremy Borden, Evan Welch, Henry Mullins, Bryant Reynolds and Travis Liebert won the Governor’s Cup Seventh Region competition for the first time since 1998.

Alex Arave, Conor McClure, Spencer Lazzari, Patrick McCarthy and Will Yates also contributed.

The team dominated Male and Eastern in the opening rounds, scoring the two highest scores of any team. The Rocks then beat St. Xavier to run their record to 5-0 against the Tigers for the year.

They played a hot Ballard team and lost 28-20 but got a second chance in the double-elimination format.  The Rocks led 15-15 with 30 seconds to go, which is when team captain Borden earned his title.

He correctly answered “aqua regia” on a toss-up, and the Rocks won 16-15.

Also placing at region for Trinity in written testing and thus advancing to the state tournament in March were the following:

• Alex Arave – Second in Social Studies
• Evan Welch – Fourth in Social Studies
• Jeremy Borden – Fifth in Science
• Braden Barnett – Fifth in Arts & Humanities
