Your Musical Favorites? House by House, Here Are the Results

Tommy McConville, Editor in Chief

Aaron Copland once said, “To stop the flow of music would be like the stopping of time itself, incredible and inconceivable.”

Music has, is, and always will be one of the great parts of life. There are countless types of music, with countless types of people to listen to it. Trinity High School has more than 1,200 students, most with an interest in music. But what, specifically, are they listening to?

After surveying advising periods, the music interests of each of the 10 Houses has been determined.

Twenty-five percent of students in advising classes were surveyed using a ballot that had different genres of music on it. The genres included rock, country, alternative/indie, rap/hip hop, pop, and EDM/dubstep. Next, students were asked to number their three favorite genres, then write down their favorite artists in the three genres they selected.

“Pink Floyd is one of my favorite bands. I think they’re classic, and you just can’t go wrong with them. For rap, again, you can’t go wrong with Kendrick; he has made a bunch of great hits. My favorite is ‘Spiteful Chant.’ I like our pop choice, too; Michael Jackson is an iconic pop star, and even though he isn’t here today, his music is still popular.”

  • Favorite Rap Artist- 2pac
  • Favorite Rock Artist- Jimi Hendrix and Metallica
  • Favorite Country Artist- Eric Church

His songs ‘Springsteen,’ ‘Lighting,’ ‘These Boots’ — all those songs are classics. I like Jimi Hendrix; I’m not a diehard fan, but he has some good songs.”

Gonzaga House

Top three genres:

  1. Rap
  2. Rock
  3. Pop
  • Favorite Rap Artist- Fetty Wap
  • Favorite Rock Artist- Led Zeppelin
  • Favorite Pop Artist- Maroon 5

“I really like Zeppelin. I think Jimmy Paige is one of the best guitarist of all time. ‘Stairway to Heaven’ probably has the greatest guitar solo of all time. I think Fetty Wap is garbage; he sounds auto-tuned. Kevin Gates is a much better rapper than Fetty. Maroon 5 is great, though. I like their old stuff a lot more than their new stuff.”

  2. Rap
  3. Country
  • Favorite Rock Artist- Aerosmith, The Beatles, and AC/DC
  • Favorite Rap Artist- J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar
  • Favorite Country Artist- Florida Georgia Line

“I like Kendrick Lamar. His last album was really good. I’m a huge country music fan, and Florida Georgia Line is great. I’ve been to a couple of concerts with them and Luke Bryan. ‘Dirt Road’ is my favorite song by them. Out of the three bands — Aerosmith, The Beatles and AC/DC — I like the Beatles. I grew up listening to the Beatles because my dad loves them.”

Ke$ha…she’s…been involved in a lot of controversy lately, but I still find her music to be catchy and fun to listen to.”

Seton House

  1. Rap
  2. Pop
  3. Country
  • Favorite Rap Artist- Fetty Wap
  • Favorite Pop Artist- Taylor Swift
  • Favorite Country Artist- Blake Shelton

“I think Taylor Swift is terrible; I don’t like any of her music, and it just puts me in a bad mood. I do like Fetty Wap, though. I tried to get out to his concert in Cincinnati last week. Blake Shelton’s song ‘Boys ‘Round Here’ is a great song. I don’t see how anybody wouldn’t like it.”

-senior Jack Wessel

Toussaint House

Top three genres:

  1. Rap
  2. Rock
  3. Pop
  • Favorite Rap Artist- Drake
  • Favorite Rock Artist- Green Day
  • Favorite Pop Artist- Taylor Swift

“I am not a big fan of Drake.  He is too emotional for me. I find Taylor Swift to be a lyrical genius, though. She definitely has moments where she shines. People think she has a ghost writer, but I think it’s all from her. I like Green Day a lot, too. One time I was walking down a boulevard and kept forgetting all my dreams (referencing Green Day’s song ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’). It was very weird.”
