Walking into Baxter Avenue Theater on a Friday night near midnight, you’re probably not going to find a whole lot of people, since most of the later showings are letting out by then. One walking by Baxter on Aug. 30 might have wondered just why in the world a line of people was stretching from Auditorium No. 8’s door, all the way out the front entrance, into the parking lot.
In fact, as I was standing in said line, I was even asked by people getting out of their 10 o’clock movie, “What is this for?” My only answer: “Robocop” rescore by Ultra Pulverize.
Ultra Pulverize is a musical outfit formed in 2004 as the byproduct of a music video project. Their costumes, robotic in all forms and reminiscent of Daft Punk, add to the synth vibes that pound from their music boards. Originally forming their group in Louisville, they’ve held concerts in locations ranging from the Kentucky area all the way to Germany and Spain. They’ve released five original albums within the past 10 years. This past week, though, they did something a little different than they normally do.
“Robocop” was released in 1987, when the band members were just boys with vivid imaginations. When they saw it, they fell in love with it. Twenty years later they decided to do something completely unique: rescore the entire film, live. Ambitious to say the least, the result that was produced is astonishing in all forms.
Tickets were taken at the door, and a stamp was stuck on the hands of audience members saying: “PROPERTY OF OCP,” the mega-corporation in the film that creates products for every consumer need, and ultimately creates Robocop.
The audience was invited into the theater for seating, and at midnight the lights went dim and the show began. The three band members, Andrew and Chris Vititoe and Jared Busch, stood on a stage in front of the movie screen in their robot attire, instruments ready to go. When the roaring lion of the MGM logo commenced, everyone in the audience knew they were in for a treat.
“What they did was ridiculously ambitious,” said Beau Kaelin, assistant manager at Baxter. “Initially, I thought they were just going to play some of their regular songs that synced up with the film. Even when they were saying they’d rescored it, I imagined it having more of a traditional Ultra Pulverize sound. But this was a huge leap forward in the evolution of the band, and I was amazed.
“They started as a crew that was a tongue-in-cheek poke at local music, and they’ve now moved to a point where they’ve raised the benchmark for the music scene in the city. Like most everyone who was there for the performance, my mind was absolutely blown with what they did, because their score did more than just make me smile at the nods to the fans. It added depth to so many scenes, making ‘Robocop’ feel as fresh as it did when I first saw it.”
The movie continued, some parts with audio omitted, others with samples of dialogue looping, and Ultra Pulverize stood in front, blasting their synths and vibes, creating a more atmospheric feel to the film than ever made before.
“Mainly, we were all just looking for something fun to do. Honestly, the idea just kind of happened out of nowhere,” Andrew Vititoe said after the show. “We all saw ‘Robocop’ when we were seven or eight, and we’ve loved it ever since. We’re all pretty obsessed with the film, so it seemed like the best movie to do this kind of thing with.”
The experience was a one-of-a-kind. You knew something special was going on in front of you. This performance was the one and only “Robocop” rescoring that will take place in Louisville, and they’re not planning on releasing a soundtrack for it. They do, however, intend on booking the “Robocop” event in the future at different out-of-town gigs, so if you want to see it, pack your bag. It’ll be worth the road trip.
Ultra Pulverize has a new EP release coming out Sept. 20, “Toxic Vacation,” the first vinyl releasing they’ve done. Check them out at www.ultrapulverize.com for more details.
