NEWS DIGEST Broadcast student wins two awards Trinity broadcast student Jonathan Dunn earned two awards at the 2013 Reel Action Video Contest Premiere & Awards Ceremony, held on Sunday Night at the Baxter Avenue Theatres. The REEL ACTION Prevention of Underage Drinking project and contest challenged teens to use their talents to create a 30-second public service announcement to take “Reel Action” to reduce underage drinking. Dunn’s video, “The Same Old Story,” received first place for Best Script. In addition, Dunn and Sacred Heart Academy junior Amanda Edelen’s video, “Don’t Become a Story,” received the runner-up award for Best Cinematography. Intramural basketball champions crowned Intramural basketball for the freshman division and the upperclass open divisions concluded on championship Sunday. In the freshman division, Romero defeated a very good Merton team 50-40 to complete a perfect 10-0 season. In the sophomore open division, Adam King’s team beat Evan Vogelsberg’s team 75-64 to win the championship and to remain undefeated with a 8-0 record. In the junior-senior north/south division, Michael Carr’s team (7-0) remained undefeated by beating Chris Miller’s team 61-39. Mark Hines’ team took on Jake Savage’s for the junior/senior east/west division championship. This game included 27 three-pointers. This was a game where the last team with the ball was going to win. Hines’ team made a basket just before the buzzer to win 79-77. Trinity Theatre to present spring musical The Trinity Department of Theatre Arts will present its spring musical, 110 in the Shade . An unmarried woman in the Old West must choose between the attentions of the local sheriff and a charismatic con man who promises to bring rain. Performance dates and times: · Mar. 6. 7, 9, 12, 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. · Mar. 16 and 17 – matinee at 2 p.m. Great Ideas Club meets with Assumption students Mr. Frank Ward’s (H’01) Great Ideas Club met again this past week with their counterparts at Assumption High School. The club involves Advanced Program students from both schools and meets regularly to discuss and debate opinions on some of the big issues of the day. This week’s meetings provided an exchange about the Pope’s recent decision to resign and the push in the United States for stronger gun control measures. Nolyn Steffey ’13 to receive ‘Unsung Hero’ Award Trinity senior Nolyn Steffey has been selected to receive a Rotary Club of Louisville A.B. Sawyer Youth Recognition Award, the “Unsung Hero” Award. Steffey will be honored at a luncheon on Mar. 21 at The Galt House Hotel & Suites. He will receive a certificate and a check in the amount of $250. Trinity’s Bring Your Own Device Program continues to gather momentum. The school adopted the policy this year to allow students to bring the electronic device that best suits their budget and learning style. Our classrooms are now filled with laptops, iPads and other assorted devices as students take notes, write papers and plan ahead for long-term research projects. At last count, more than 65 percent of our students had registered such devices, and the number continues to increase. At the same time, Trinity continues to maintain eight computer labs for students who need to access our equipment here at school. Rojas-Ortega reigning Impromptu Speaking champion at Smoky Mountain Invitational Tournament Last week members of the Speech and Debate team traveled to Gatlinburg, Tenn., to compete in the Smoky Mountain Invitational. This tournament, a long-standing, competitive regional tournament, hosts some of the best competitors from Kentucky and Tennessee. Sophomore JP Diehl and freshman Jorge Rojas-Ortega advanced out of prelims in Impromptu Speaking, placing them in the top 24 out of a field of 96 competitors. Diehl dropped in the quarterfinals, but Rojas-Ortega advanced through semifinals to the final round. Rojas-Ortega won first place and is the reigning champion of Impromptu Speaking at the Smoky Mountain Invitational Tournament. Abdullahi Abdullahi ’13 becomes American citizen Congratulations to Trinity senior Abdullahi Abdullahi on officially becoming an American citizen at a ceremony at Louisville City Hall on Feb. 22.
