All the way from South Africa, Trinity varsity soccer player Sphiwe “Dinho” Zwane has made a pretty big impact on Trinity soccer — and plans on more his senior year. Dinho, a junior, started to play soccer at Trinity his freshman year and since then has taken his play to a higher level. Dinho said, “I started to play when I was five. At seven, I played in higher levels.” Dinho’s two favorite soccer players inspire him — Brazilian legend Ronaldinho and 2010 World Cup finals hero Andres Iniesta. Former Trinity soccer coach Walter Mata said, “We have had many good players at Trinity, but he’s considered one of the best. He’s a quality player.” Not a player with imposing size, Dinho relies on quickness and soccer knowledge. Mata said, “I was impressed with his foot skills and his presence on the field. He played like a big-time player.” Current soccer head coach Barry Swearingen agreed. “At first, I noticed his size, his unbelievable foot skill, and his speed,” Swearingen said. “He’s really strong for his size. He has the ability to find people on the field. His vision is unbelievable, and he knows how to strike a ball.” Size usually comes as a factor in soccer. Small but quick players are the hardest to mark up on, and this is no exception with Dinho, who plays club soccer for Javanon. Dinho believes in passing the ball, something many players don’t do. Many try to dribble past defenders, and that’s what can cause losses in soccer. Dinho is unselfish and will pass the ball when necessary. Of his playing style, Dinho said, “I’m that type to help everyone out and have a lot of responsibility. Sometimes it can be hard, and sometimes it can be easy.”
