And now there are 12. The Rocks have added bass fishing to its list of KHSAA sports, which has grown from 10 to 12 over the past two years. Bowling moved from club sport to KHSAA status last year. “Thanks for launching this new program,” said school president Dr. Rob Mullen when addressing the team members at a meeting. Math teacher Mr. Mike Chancellor will coach the 12 students who will compete for the Kentucky High School Athletic Association championship this spring. The members of the team combine fishing veterans and members of Trinity’s Fishing Club, which has been a highlight for many young men at Trinity. “I’m really excited about the new team,” Fishing Club president Dylan McCauley said. “The Fishing Club has been one of the (best) things of my four-year high school career.” The Fishing Club members want to take what was once a fun activity on weekends to a more competitive level with their new team. “It makes it more exciting and competitive,” senior Brendan Christ said. The KHSAA splits the state into four regions for the fishing competition. Trinity is listed in the Central Region with their home lake being Taylorsville, where practice will soon begin. Students must provide their own insured boat. While Trinity has dominated other sports, the bass fishing team expects tough competition. The school will be competing against 30 to 40 other schools from across Kentucky. The team’s biggest competition should be Nelson County, who won the 2012 state championship. Chancellor said Nelson County’s team is running and lifting weights in the off-season to prepare. Senior Austin McConnell, who has been fishing for 13 years, thinks Trinity will be competitive. “I feel like we’re going to win,” he said. “It’s not going to be a joke.” Official KHSAA rules state there will be two members per boat, making six teams for Trinity. McCauley and McConnell are partners who have competed in several tournaments together and say with their experience, they hope to win. KHSAA tournaments are scheduled throughout the spring up until the state contest. The top schools are selected to compete in the state tournament at the end of April. “They make a big deal of it,” said Chancellor, who started fishing when he was five. Before the season officially starts, the team knows it will have to practice plenty. Chancellor said he wants to use the end of spring break for a good deal of practice before the state tournament.
