Some THS faculty added Halloween garb to today’s instruction. BEST SCARES in the AREA by Joseph Sims Halloween always seems to come around the perfect time of the year. The weather is cool, the leaves are changing, and something in the air just feels perfect. The nostalgia for childhood that comes along with Halloween is felt by many. If you said goodbye to trick-or-treating years ago, fear not! There are still many thrilling things for you to do on Halloween that are sure to cater to the young adult / high school crowd’s appetite for anything scary. There are several locations in and around louisville that will definitely get your heart racing. The one that deserves first mention in the scare scene is Louisville’s own Waverly Hills Sanatorium. Waverly is an old tuberculosis hospital that is held in high regard as one of the most haunted places in the United States because of all the odd occurrences and high rate of deaths that took place there from 1910 to 1962. During the Halloween season, the hospital opens its doors for tours. Admission price is $20 for a tour and $20 for the haunted house. Thirty-nine-year-old Angie Farley had only positive things to say about the tour. “I kept seeing things in my peripheral vision. It was very unsettling.” Farley said that while you wouldn’t hear it publicized, her tour guides reassured the group that Waverly was absolutely the No. 1 most haunted place in the United States. “I would definitely recommend it,” she said. “It was one of the scariest experiences of my life.” Desmond Grobber, 19, said, “The thing that freaked me out the most, was the tour guides’ story of the homeless man and dog being beaten to death in the elevator, not to mention that my hair was standing up the whole time from hearing scary noise after scary noise. I kept seeing lights and heard the slight sound of jingling keys follow me all around the hospital. The noise was coming directly behind me every time. I’m very convinced that it’s haunted, but whether or not the stories the tour guides told us were true, you know, it could have all just been hyped up to try and mess with us.” Without a doubt, Waverly is on top of the list for an authentic scary time. But what about some of the other Halloween attractions around this year? The Baxter Avenue Morgue was also a popular destination for both young and old looking for a good scare, though it had some mixed reviews. “The actors were really horrible,” said Bailley Greene, 16, of Jeffersontown High School. “There were some scary parts, but it just wasn’t that scary. I would have probably gotten a lot more scared watching the new ‘Paranormal Activity.’”
