When students walked into Trinity on the first day of school in August, they were introduced to many new things–new teachers, new classes, new schedules and, of course, block scheduling. Another new, less obvious aspect of the school is the system called Prezi. Just what is Prezi? “Prezi is a free cloud-based program that allows someone to post pictures, videos, and other content onto the Internet,” said Mr. Michael Price, network and development specialist at Trinity. Prezi is similar to PowerPoint in that students have to create slides that each have their own topic and information. Students can also post pictures and videos on the slides, just like PowerPoint. The difference, though, is that Prezi allows for a more creative way of learning and teaching. Prezi allows the user to create a storyline, or pathway, the person viewing the slideshow can follow. Another great thing about Prezi is that it is all online. “Teachers can put instructional questions, text, and other content on the Internet,” Price said. “They don’t have to save it on the computer or flash drive. They can simply put it on the Internet.” This is helpful especially when a computer crashes and the user may lose an entire project. Normally, they would have to go back and redo the entire project or lesson, but not on Prezi. Since Prezi is all online, students can access the slideshow anywhere, anytime. They can even use Prezi on their Ipod or Ipad, using a special app just for Prezi. Probably the best and most important feature of Prezi is that it allows students to work on group projects without the group meeting. “It allows for up to 10 people to edit the same document simultaneously. It’s great for group projects,” Price said. Instead of having to e-mail the part of the PowerPoint presentation students have completed to the other members, they can all work on the project at the same time using Prezi, even when they’re not in the same room. Just ask Trinity teacher Mr. Michael Budniak, whose Advanced Program freshmen students are using Prezi for a project, how helpful Prezi is. “The students can work on it at home or in class, but the entire group doesn’t have to be present to work on it at the same time,” Budniak said. When asked what he thinks of Prezi, Budniak said, “I love it. It is a scary thing when I actually do this stuff at home, and it’s almost as much fun as watching movies. Now that’s a scary thought.” Budniak said his students are also enjoying the program. He said, “The students seem to like it much more so because it’s so versatile. They can add video clips; they can add their own personality to it. The sense of emotion tends to keep them interested.”
