Led by sophomore sensation Thomas Cooper, the Trinity swimming and diving team finished third in the KHSAA State Meet, held at the University of Louisville’s Ralph Wright Natatorium. The Rocks scored 189 points to St. Xavier’s 484.5 and Covington Catholic’s 235. Cooper won the 50-yard free (20.67) and the 100-yard free (45.09). In the preliminaries of the 100 free, Cooper set a state record by finishing in 44.71. The previous record, held by two-time Olympian Nate Dusing, was set in 1997. Other school records set during the meet were by Chandler Lichtefeld in the 200 individual medley, and the 400 free relay team of Nate Bond, Preston Schilling, Lichtefeld and Cooper. Trinity coach Wayne Kraus said, “The 400 free relay team was the first to beat St. X in any relay event at the state meet since 1987.Cooper’s time of 44.71 should be in the top 10 nationwide–and will almost certainly rank first among all sophomores in the United States.” Video of Cooper’s state record: http://www.ihigh.com/khsaa/broadcast_210693.html?silverlight=1
