Intramural sports are a major part of many college students’ lives. They are also a major role in Trinity students’ school experience. Trinity offers a good range of intramural sports to their students–basketball, ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, bowling and Ping Pong are the most recent. Trinity senior Alex Blair said, “Intramurals are great. I love playing against my classmates. It brings me a sense of pride when I beat my classmates.” Intramurals at Trinity offer a way to play sports and stay active. When freshmen arrive at Trinity, they are strongly encouraged to participate in intramurals. Trinity teacher Mr. Mike Chancellor, who helps coordinate intramurals, said, “For incoming freshmen, it is very important for them to try every possible activity, not just intramurals. Each experience will direct their decision making in the future. Being involved allows any student to create their own, unique Trinity experience and become a THS brother for life.” It is never too late to start playing intramurals—even for seniors who haven’t played before. “It is an easy way to meet new classmates and get involved doing school activities. It creates the togetherness of a class as it moves towards graduation,” Chancellor said. College intramural sports offer similar benefits to students. In college, as at Trinity, many people come into school and know very few people. Intramural sports offer a way to meet people with common interests. They allow students to hang out with other students and play a sport they enjoy. But at both high school and college, the activities should be fun. Miami of Ohio University’s mission statement refers to intramurals as “fun through sports…as part of an educational community.” College intramurals offer a broader range of sports like ice hockey and lacrosse. Many colleges offer different leagues that play at different levels so everyone can play at their skill level. Daniel Carey, a 2011 Trinity graduate, plays intramural hockey at Miami of Ohio. He said, “I love intramural hockey. It is played at a high enough level so that it is still a challenge.”
