Shane Hwang is not the typical Trinity High School senior. Shane is a foreign exchange student from South Korea who has spent his high school career away from his family and home town to be part of the Trinity community. One of three students he was roommates with in a Korean boarding school, Shane decided to remain in the Trinity family when the other two students went back to South Korea. Shane came to the United States Aug. 9, 2008, and since then has definitely become part of the school community and part of the Boda family, his legal U.S guardians with whom he lives. Among his classes, Shane said he likes community service the most. Shane is a teacher’s assistant at Holy Spirit for the second grade. He helps around the class and grades papers, something Shane says is one of his favorite things to do with community service. “I just love those kids,” Shane said about his class at Holy Spirit. Shane is also a member of the jazz band. He said playing guitar is one of his favorite hobbies since he moved to America. Shane has not yet decided on a college, but he has applied to a handful of both American and Asian colleges—the University of Connecticut, Purdue University, the University of Illinois and some Asian colleges that include Japanese schools Wafeta University and Sophie University. Shane has made quite the impression on his American family as well as Trinity. Hiram Choi, a student at Ballard, said that Shane has taught him many lessons in life and is a great person to talk to in tough times. Shane has also tutored Hiram in physics and has taught him guitar. Choi said that Shane is a great person to “chill with. He is good entertainment.” Shane’s fellow seniors agree with Choi. Blake Hester said, “Shane is a really good guy. He always goes out of his way to say hi.” If you would like to submit a student’s name for a future “A look into the life” story, contact this reporter at [email protected].
