Trinity senior Cameron Murphy and junior Jacob Hollenbach are in the up-and-coming band Scarlet Smile. The band has been around for about two years now, but not until a year and a half ago did their line-up finalize. Murphy (bass), and Hollenbach (drums), make up half the band, teaming up with ex-Trinity student (and now a junior at Ballard) Nick Conroy (guitar/ backing vocals) and St. Xavier junior Sam Varga (guitar/vocals). The band is influenced by such groups as Escape the Fate, Chiodos, A Day To Remember, The Devil Wears Prada, A Skylit Drive, Senses Fail, Circa Survive, and Saosin. Murphy derives personal influence from bands like La Dispute, Alice in Chains, Coheed and Cambria, and Chiodos. He is inspired by musicians like Layne Staley of Alice and Chains and Jordan Dryer of La Dispute. These personal influences are not uniform throughout the band, though, with Alesana, Aiden, and Suicide Silence influencing Hollenbach, and his favorite musician being Corey La Quay of A Skylit Drive. Varga derives inspiration from post-hardcore bands like Escape the Fate, A Skylit Drive, Circa Survive, and Saosin. Conroy has heavier influences, getting inspiration from death-core bands Whitechapel and Chelsea Grin. Their popularity has increased, first opening for other local bands, then opening for big name bands such as Saosin, Sleeping With Sirens, and Ataris, and finally co-headlining the Crestwood Revival show with another popular local hardcore act, Remember Me Always. They are releasing their EP in early December, and hope to go on tour next summer. Soon after their EP is released, they plan on writing new material for their first full-length album. They hope to be done with this album in roughly a year.
