Trinity’s tennis team has a new home field in the form of a new tennis facility shared with Top Gun Tennis Academy. “These facilities represent the first time ever that Trinity tennis will actually have a home court,” head coach Chris Mather said in an e-mail exchange. The facility at Top Gun, which is owned by Mather, will offer Trinity tennis a solid foundation for future conquests. Said senior Alden Ludwick: “Although we will only be using them for a year, I’m glad that the future players will have a solid facility that they can call their ‘home’ courts.” Fellow senior Spencer Walsh agreed: “I think that it is a big step for the Trinity tennis program. We will have some of the nicest high school facilities in the state.” Trinity will boast seven courts and a pavillion upon the completion of the facilities. “Eight courts is big enough to host a tournament,” Trinity teacher and assistant coach Paul Vale said.“ In addition to new courts, there will be other new additions, including private lockers (a luxury players sorely missed at their former home at Seneca), restrooms and showers. “For the first two years (I was here), we didn’t have our own courts,” junior Parker Lawson said. “We had to share time with other schools at Seneca Park.” Lawson also expressed his qualms: “(On the) flipside, the new courts are 20 minutes from school, whereas Seneca is five.” The Courier-Journal reported that the original plans to construct six new courts in Seneca Park were met with opposition by St. Matthews residents when unveiled in 2008. The overall price tag on these courts is said to be a figure below $500,000. Though the exact terms of division are private, Trinity will augment Top Gun to help cover the cost, with members of the tennis team conducting fundraisers to aid in the acquisition of needed cash. Mather said, “Most of the fun of the playing high school sports is knowing that you follow in a tradition and are part of a program. The new facility will help to allow Trinity tennis to become a complete tennis program.”
