Ever been hungry for pizza but tired of the same old choices? Well, that happened to me recently until I remembered a place my friend Kaelin is always talking about. He attends that other Catholic high school, on Poplar Level Road, and frequently walks to Jockamo’s after school because it is located nearby at 983 Goss Avenue. My family and I decided to give it a try, hopeful that it would live up to Kaelin’s lofty recommendation. Owner Frankie Frances opened Jockamo’s Pizza Pub in February of 2005 and has been serving quality pizza, sandwiches, calzones, pasta and breadsticks ever since. Since there were five of us eating, we decided we would try a little bit of everything. We started off with the breadsticks, which are made fresh, hand-rolled daily and served smothered in garlic butter with homemade marinara sauce for dipping. In addition, they also offer garlic sticks, cheese sticks, chili sticks, meatball sticks, pepperoni sticks, pizza sticks with your choice of any three pizza toppings, Hawaiian sticks with ham, pineapple and BBQ sauce for dipping, and cinnamon or s’more sticks for dessert. We sampled a cheese stick, Hawaiian stick, meatball stick and chili stick, and my brother decided to make a meal out of three differently topped pizza sticks. The prices range from $1.50 to $3.75, and we all agreed that they are well worth every penny. For the rest of our dinners, we had a Mexican calzone ($11.25), half order of vegetable lasagna ($5.75), meatball sub ($7.25), and a small cheese pizza ($6.25), and none of these dishes failed to satisfy our hungry appetites and high expectations. And even though we were all stuffed, my mom insisted that we share a s’more stick for dessert, and we were all glad she did. It came on a plate of melted butter stuffed with Nutella (we thought of you, Mr. Wilson) and miniature marshmallows that were toasted under the broiler. It was the perfect ending to a delicious meal at our newest favorite pizza restaurant. So if you are ever searching for someplace different to go with the family, a date or just the guys–they also have 2 plasmas playing ESPN and cornhole in the next room–I suggest you give Jockamo’s Pizza Pub a try. It’s reasonably priced, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, they have the best vegetable lasagna I have ever tasted for all of you vegetarians out there, and you will think you have died and gone to heaven when you bite into one of their s’more sticks for dessert. I must remember to thank Kaelin because evidently even a St. X student gets something right every once in awhile.
