The Trinity Shamrocks basketball team beat Jeffersontown 65-57 on Feb. 5, but on Mar. 7, it was a different story. J’town ended Trinity’s season 50-38 in a Seventh Region Tournament quarterfinal game at Louisville Gardens. The Shamrocks held the Chargers to only six points in the first quarter, but J’town did the same to the Rocks. It was still a defensive game until about midway through the second quarter when the game had a sudden change. Trinity’s Jeff Kirksey fouled a Chargers shooter and sent him to the line. Kirksey then picked up a technical foul. J’town had four free throws and made three of them to give themselves an 18-12 lead. J’town’s Thomas Coleman then ducked the ball under the basket and J’town never looked back. At halftime the score was 25-12 in favor of J’town. Trinity head coach Mike Szabo told reporters, “I looked for some positive things on the stat sheet and couldn’t find anything.” Trinity (21-8) never got closer than seven to J’town in the second half. “Our defense was fabulous,” J’town head coach Jeff Morrow said. Tanner Jacobs was the only Shamrock to hit double figures, and he finished with 10 points in his final game in a Trinity uniform. Trinity senior Brett Berry finished with four points. “It was hard to play my last game like this,” Berry said. “We had a good year.” Nick Gagel led J’town with 19 points.
