The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the sequel to The Super Mario Movie, was released April 1, 2026. It was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, while starring famous actors such as Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Glen Powell, Brie Larson and many more. I have always been a fan of the Mario franchise, and this movie does not disappoint. There are many distinct aspects of the film that make it fun and enjoyable for a span of ages, as well as keeping the audience engaged with the many game series references and nods.

The plot follows Mario and his crew, which is growing in number, being attacked by Bowser Jr., the son of the evil king of the Koopas, Bowser, who Team Mario has turned small and therefore harmless. In his path to restoring his father, Bowser Jr. looks toward world domination. Along the way, he kidnaps his “power source,” needed to push him and his dad into a universal superpower.

Like I said, I am a huge fan of the franchise, so my experience watching the movie was very enjoyable. The film has beautiful visuals and design, along with amazing music and a soundtrack to play behind it. I had multiple jaw-dropping moments at every little detail. What stood out to me about the film was the creativity. They took a lot of liberties, which was dangerous, but it was still incredibly fun despite some of the inaccuracies from the games.

In terms of the actual review, I really did like the movie. Like I said, it was fun, and I had an exciting time watching it, but it was not the richest in plot. The plot and the story itself feel very rushed and make it feel a little scattered. The cinematography was amazing, and the animation was beautiful, so I have no issues with that, and I praise the animation team heavily. To me, there is not really any deep thematic content, considering the time when Princess Peach goes off with Toad and leads them in beating a whole array of enemies as a nice swapping of traditional gender roles, which they did a suitable job with. I had mentioned earlier, but the sound and music of the film were phenomenal and truly added to the experience.

Overall, this movie was a very fun watch. I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the Mario franchise, but I would say don’t go into it thinking it’ll be the deepest work ever. It’s a fun movie targeted for a younger audience, for sure, that fans can truly appreciate. The animators did a fantastic job on this film and add immense value to it. Once again, I would heavily recommend this film.
