Do you need a new playlist for your summer break this year? If you’re a fan of Daft Punk, you’re in luck – the duo’s fourth studio album is right around the corner. Daft Punk, the famous house music duo from France known for their public persona as a duo of robots, will release a new album today. This will be the duo’s first new studio album since “Human After All,” released in 2005. Tracks from the album, titled “Random Access Memories,” have been teased since February through commercial breaks of “Saturday Night Live” and in between concerts at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. “Get Lucky,” the first single from the new album, already has fans excited for the duo’s return. Musicians Nile Rodgers and Pharrel Williams contributed to the song, which has garnered well over 18 million views on youtube in less than one month. “I think it’s the bomb,” senior Justin Leonard said about “Get Lucky.” “It actually started a big old musical adventure for me. I was listening to a bunch of their stuff, like the “Alive” album.” Leonard, like many Daft Punk fans, plans on buying the new album. He said, “If that teaser track is anything like the rest of it, then it’s worth the money.” Leonard doesn’t seem to be the only one who thinks this – the album has already topped bestsellers lists on pre-orders alone. Those interested in buying a physical copy should keep in mind the possibility of stores selling out quickly. The new single has been described by some as having 1980s funk-like sounds, and others say it’s more 1970s disco-like. The sound was praised by senior Nolan Wileman. He said, “I really like it. It’s different from a lot of what other electronic artists do. It’s not like dubstep stuff. It’s like ‘Discovery’ more than their recent album.” Daft Punk’s appeal to Wileman wasn’t found only in the music, however. “I like the ideas behind their songs,” he said. “Their videos, their artwork, and just their whole image are interesting because they take their art not only into the music, but they incorporate it into everything they are as well. A lot of people don’t do that, and I think it’s really interesting.” “I really like the beats they have in their songs,” Connor Priest said of Daft punk. “They’ve got a very unique sound and tone to them. I’ll probably be buying the album.” Daft Punk has been known to reach wide audiences, so if you’re in search of some new summer tunes, keep “Random Access Memories” in your mind even if you aren’t familiar with the duo.
