The Democratic Party came into the 2008 election stressing the need for change. Whether the candidates consider themselves progressive or liberal, all of them want to get this country back on the right path. The strength of this party is its willingness to understand that we are a country that is nine trillion dollars in debt, is fighting a war that has yet to achieve its main goal, and sees our label as the premier world power is diminishing. The Democrats’ weaknesses lie in the fact that they have no clear definition of what their party stands for. The main points being stressed by the Democrats are universal health care, immigration, environmental problems and the war in Iraq. If the Democrats stay true to their old tactics of winning over the working class, stressing equality among people, as well as adding new tactics such as making health care cheaper and finding new ways to further medical research, then a majority of America will stand by them. But the biggest issue, for both Democrats and Republicans, has nothing to do with politics. Whether we like it or not, the world is heating up. By 2057, the average temperature of the world will rise by an astounding 10 degrees Fahrenheit if we continue at our current pace. Focusing on global warming shows the Democrats’ impetus to act, rather than lay dormant in worldwide issues as the present administration has done. Although this issue improves the Democrats’ chances immensely, their inability to define what being a Democrat means, however, could steer votes towards the Republicans. Many of the Democrats are playing the “Vote Against Bush” card instead of telling people what they truly stand for.
