A new era of tennis has arrived at Trinity as Matthew McGrail has been named the school’s new head coach. McGrail brings energy and dedication, aiming to produce state championships and collegiate-level players while building a strong team culture.
McGrail brings high school tennis experience from coaching numerous juniors around the city, many of whom have gone on to play college tennis. In an interview, McGrail said, “I think the last time I checked, I coach like seven of the varsity independently. When the job was offered to me, I just wanted to be, you know, a bigger part of helping these young men grow.” He has trained juniors from across the city and state, producing college players and dramatically improving players’ rankings and ratings. McGrail has been coaching privately for five years and full time for three.
Asked about his outlook and expectations for the season, optimism and energy were evident. McGrail wants to improve every player on the roster and win as many matches as possible. “I want this team to compete in every single match,” he said. Long-term, he added, “I have two goals. I want to train collegiate-level athletes and I want to win state championships.”
McGrail also expressed excitement about this year’s roster. “We’ve got a bunch of good players, right? Like, we’ve got a deep, senior-laden team who are really athletic, really excited and super coachable,” he said.
McGrail attended Henderson County High School, where he was a nationally ranked and highly rated junior. His high school career featured four regional championships and deep runs at the state tournament.
Overall, McGrail is confident in this group’s potential. With a rigorous seven-day-a-week practice schedule, he aims to help players improve both on and off the court. McGrail looks to lead multiple teams to state and challenge the top programs the city has to offer.
