The Heart Behind Campus Ministry: Mrs. Emrich

Faith, family and music. This is what keeps Mrs. Mary Emrich herself. For over the past 20 years, she has been building connections with students, teachers and priests. Her impact on Trinity is evident in students who go on senior retreat and come back with deeper connections to their brothers.

Since her high school days leading retreats as a senior, Mrs. Emrich has been inspiring and helping people grow in faith. Today at Trinity, she is one of two campus ministers and leads senior retreats. In 2002, Mrs. Emrich applied for campus minister without really knowing anything about Trinity. “I was working at UofL at the time and wanted to get back into ministry, so I just took a shot, and I’ve been here ever since.” Before she ever got into campus ministry, Mrs. Emrich got involved in retreats, leading them in high school and continuing through college.

As strong as faith is to Mrs. Emrich, she is also part of a band with her family. “Moses on a Motorbike” is the name of her band, which stems from a dad joke about Moses’ mighty trumpet on Mount Sinai. The band came together during COVID when her daughters learned how to play the ukulele and guitar. During the pandemic, they spent a lot of time together playing music, learning songs and singing covers like Fleetwood Mac, Elton John and The Beatles. Mrs. Emrich and her band have performed at Our Lady of Perpetual Hops, J-Town Beach and the Wild About Shelbyville festival.

For Mrs. Emrich, Trinity is about giving kids the opportunity to find their faith and connect with their brothers at Trinity. She is giving students opportunities she was given in high school by Fr. Gerry Reinersman and Fr. Tom Sachse, which she credits with giving her opportunities to lead retreats and attend different conferences to grow her leadership skills. Emrich explained that she is grateful to work in Campus Ministry because she gets to know students, create lifelong friends, share faith, and be a part of the amazing Trinity community. I myself can personally say that I have gotten to know Mrs. Emrich better this senior year. When I was on retreat, she was my retreat leader, and I am so thankful she was, as her story, her faith, and her resilience has had an impact on me that will stick with me forever.
