Football star, basketball prodigy, track wonder, seven-time state champion. Most recently, a national letter of intent signee to play football at the University of Louisville. Any one of those accomplishments would be more than most athletes could wish for, but to athletics superstar James Quick, they are still not enough. Every story has its beginning, however. There was a time before Quick madness set itself into the hearts of Trinity fans and many more throughout the community. There was once a time when he was just a kid working his tail off for the love of the games. The journey started at the age of five when Quick’s grandfather, whom Quick says is the most influential coach he has ever had, introduced him to the game of football. His skills progressed as the years passed until he decided he wanted to go to Trinity in the eighth grade. Freshman year was when football really clicked for Quick. This was also the time he began to really click with his natural abilities as an athlete in basketball and track. Football continued to be his real passion, with the other sports “something to do to keep me in shape for football,” Quick said. Even as just a way to stay in performance shape, Quick swiftly stole the spotlight. A major contributing member of the school’s first state champion basketball team last year, Quick has already won three 200-meter state championships in track, as well as setting the state record in the 200 (20.94). “It felt great just breaking a record,” Quick said. After a third consecutive football state title, Quick plans to go to state one more time for basketball and track, looking to boost his number of state championships from seven to nine. Quick is a role model to younger players, motivating them to run the extra miles he runs. “What a lot of people don’t know is that James works very hard,” football head coach Bob Beatty said. “The younger kids see him working hard and think ‘I want to be like that.’” Quick has more than 8,000 followers on the popular social networking site Twitter. All the stardom, however, has not stopped Quick from being a good student with plans to take his academic and athletic skills to U of L. He signed on Feb. 6 with his father’s alma mater. For the rest of basketball and track seasons, Quick will be a source of pride for Trinity sports fans. He will also continue to give his all to every game and meet because, as he sums up his passion, “I just love winning.”
