Basketball * The top-ranked Trinity basketball Rocks pushed their record to 23-4 and their winning streak to 12 over the weekend. Friday the Rocks traveled to 10th-ranked Lexington Lafayette and knocked off the Generals on their home floor by a score of 65-51. The Rocks turned up the defense in the second half, holding the Generals to just 20 points. James Quick led Trinity with 18 points, Darryl Hicks added 17, and Trey Ivory also added 14 points. The tough Trinity defense allowed just 20 points in the second half. The theme of the weekend was no rest for the weary as the Rocks turned around the very next night to travel to Central High School for a matchup with a tough Central Yellowjacket squad. Trinity established their defense from the beginning as the Rocks took a 37-21 lead into the half and never looked back. Atop Trinity’s balanced scoring was Quick with 17 as Ivory added 16 and Craig Owens 15. Trinity plays host to Elizabethtown Tuesday, Feb. 12, with senior night festivities beginning around 7 p.m. * Hicks scored 24 points as the visiting Shamrocks (21-4) cruised past Atherton on Feb. 5 and locked up the No. 1 seed for the district tournament. Ivory added 16 points. The Rocks’ defense raced to a 20-point halftime by forcing 14 first-half turnovers. This is the fifth consecutive year Trinity has surpassed 20 victories in a season. * The No. 2-ranked Shamrocks defeated No. 5 Madison Central 75-62 on Feb. 1 at Trinity’s Steinhauser Gym, avenging last year’s loss to the Indians and ending their 10-game winning streak. Quick’s 17 points led the Rocks, who placed four others in double figures. Ivory, Hicks and Owens added 12 points apiece. Owens also had a team-high 10 rebounds as the Rocks dominated the boards 36-21. * On Jan. 29, Quick swished his first four 3-point shots, and Hicks scored 11 in his first action in eight games as the Rocks (19-4) blew past No. 6 Pleasure Ridge Park 71-34. * Trinity traveled to Mt. Sterling, Ky., for the Joe B. Hall Prep Classic on Jan. 26. The Rocks got a career-high 23 points from Ivory in a 66-55 victory over host Montgomery County. Ivory, the Rocks’ junior point guard, hit 5 of 6 three-point attempts and helped Trinity finish 9 of 18 from behind the arc. Miles Rice posted 13 points and Owens added 10. The Rocks trailed 6-2 early but put together a 21-3 run to take control. Ivory scored eight points during the surge, including a 3 that gave the Rocks a 23-9 lead with 5:15 left in the second quarter. * The No. 2-ranked Shamrocks got points from 10 players in pounding visiting Waggener on Jan. 25. Quick scored a game-high 18 points for the Rocks. Bowling Rocks reach state semis; Minogue regional champ The Rocks competed in the second KHSAA state bowling tournament. In the field of 16, the Rocks placed fourth in the seeding round. Leading the Rocks were Alex Kulas-235, Logan Clark-224, and Sam Jackie-212. This placed the Rocks against Cooper High School from Northern Kentucky. The Rocks won the best of three by scores of 192-160, 204-161, and 205-195. Round 2 pitted the Rocks against Bourbon County. The Rocks again defeated their opponent by scores of 191-183, 269-182, 162-217, and 245-230. In the semis the Rocks faced PRP. The Rocks cooled off a bit and lost 196-194, 222-172, and 209-177. Simon Kenton defeated PRP in the final to win the state championship. Conor Minogue ’14 regional champ Trinity sent four bowlers to the Region Four Singles Tournament at Fern Valley Strike and Spare. Bowling for the Rocks were senior Joe Wuertz, juniors Justin Wiech and Conor Minogue, and freshman Logan Clark. Thirty-two bowlers from eight schools competed for four spots in next week’s state tournament. The first round had bowlers roll three games. Then the field was cut to eight. Scores for the Rocks were Wiech with a 562 series, Clark (602), Wuertz (663) and Conor Minogue (667 with games of 260, 203 and 204). These scores placed Wuertz and Minogue in the final eight. After two more games, the field was cut to the final four, all of whom qualified for state. Minogue was seeded fourth for the Rocks. In order, Minogue defeated Male’s Michael McCubbins 246-223, Manual’s Kyle Abell 179-178 and, in the finals, beat Manual’s Kiefer Hillerich 224-214 to take the regional crown. Swimming & Diving The swim & dive team brought home the regional runner-up trophy in a total team effort. St. Xavier won the regional. Thomas Cooper was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer of the meet, winning and setting school and regional records in the 200 freestyle (1:38.94) and the 100 butterfly (50.55). Cooper, Chandler Lichtefeld, Preston Schilling and Daniel Whitehead won the 400 free relay in a regional record time (3:11.13). Special recognition to Whitehead, Michael Gilligan, and David Bunnell for swimming all personal bests and qualifying in both of their individual events for the state meet. * Senior Nick Johnson placed second at the regional diving meet on Feb. 5 at the University of Louisville. He automatically moves on to the state meet in two weeks. Also scoring for the Rocks were Joey Domhoff and Kyle Hillebrand, as the swim Rocks netted 41 points on the evening. * Johnson placed second out of 29 divers in the Louisville Diving Invitational, and the swimmers captured their third consecutive Brown Bear Sprint title. The swimmers were led by the dominating corkscrew relay of Kyle Hillebrand, Austin Schmiedler, Joey Domhoff and Clay Grant. Wrestling The Trinity wrestling team was region runner-up to St. Xavier (255-218) and had four individual champions. They were Keegan Duncan (120), Hudson Heidorf (126), Ian Kahl (138) and Bobby Bryant (285). Region runners-up were Steven Matheny (113), Ben Barton (132), Cody Webb (145) and Clayton Smith (152). The state tournament takes place this weekend at Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.
