Rocks sweep art contest The Trinity Art Department students participated in the St. Matthews Woman’s Club Art Contest and swept the competition. The following Rocks took first place: junior Cody Swabek in painting, senior Brian Nieto in printmaking, junior Mitchell Smith in watercolor, and senior Bryan Oberhausen in photography. The state competition will be held in April. Dr. Heaverin to speak at local conference The Archdiocese of Louisville has asked Trinity Traditional Department Chairperson Dr. Debbie Heaverin to speak with high school learning support counselors on Jan. 24. The presentation will discuss the technology Trinity incorporates with Traditional students. Trinity often hosts workshops for teachers of learning-different students and has long been known in the community for the work of the Traditional Department. Last summer, Traditional Department teacher Mrs. Betsy Darby received the Edward M. Shaughnessy III Serving All God’s Children Award for Inclusion at a national conference for her work. Speech Rocks led by Smith and Ross-Ortega The speech Rocks traveled to Lafayette High School to compete in the Thelma Beeler Invitational. Leading the way for the Rocks were sophomore Drew Smith, who placed seventh in Broadcasting, and freshman Jorge Rojas-Ortega, who placed eighth in Extemporaneous Speaking and fifth in Impromptu Speaking. With his fifth-place finish, Rojas-Ortega has pre-qualified his second event for the state tournament in March. Quick Recall Rocks wrap up regular season with win over KCD The quick recall team ended the league regular season on Jan. 17 with wins at the varsity and JV level over Kentucky Country Day. In the varsity match, the team of Sean Link, Max Brown, Eric Elder and captain Ori Youngblood led 11-7 at halftime. They warmed up in the second half and won 25-11. The varsity team finished the year as league runner-up with a 10-1 record. The JV team of Buddy Young, Ben Baughman, Evan Stacy, Evan Welch and captain Matthew Gregory withstood a late KCD rally that tied the match in the second half. The Rocks went on to win 25-22 and finish third in the league. Quick Recall Rocks defeat Christian Academy The quick recall team got back into league action on Jan. 8 with matches at Christian Academy. The varsity team rallied in the final 10 questions to win 20-18. Credit goes to Ori Youngblood for spearheading the late surge. The all-freshman JV team comprised of Buddy Young, Evan Welch, Evan Stacy and captain Matt Gregory played without their usual sophomore assistance. They competed very well but were defeated 25-23.
