Expanding Horizons: How Travel Opens Doors for Students

For many high school students, traveling abroad feels like only a thought, but for Henry Mitchell, a Trinity senior, it became a reality. Encouraged by his teachers and parents, Henry joined one of Trinity’s international trips, exploring Italy and France this past summer. What began as a school opportunity quickly turned into a journey of growth, culture discovery, and lifelong connections with friends.

“The people that really got me into it were definitely Mr. Harris and my parents,” Henry said. “Mr. Harris is one of my favorite teachers, and he, along with Mr. Dotsey, really hyped up the trip. My parents were also very supportive — they wanted me to experience something new.”

Henry applied for the trip during his sophomore year and spent the following summer before senior year exploring Venice, Florence, Rome, and Paris. His main goal, he said, was to experience other cultures and gain perspective beyond the classroom. “You don’t get the opportunity to go out of the country a lot,” he explained. “This was my one chance to see a different form of life.”

The experience, Henry believes, offered lessons that extend far beyond travel. “It gives you something unique to put on college applications,” he said. “It also helps if you’re interested in studying abroad later — you already have that background.”

But the trip wasn’t just about sightseeing. “The 27 guys I went with — I got a lot closer with them,” Henry said. “You bond through the journey. You’re seeing things you’ll never forget together.”

For Henry, the value of school travel is clear: it builds curiosity and community. “I think more schools should promote it,” he said. “You’re not just learning history, you’re living in it.”
