Grayson Willoughby: Trinity’s Two-Way Ace Poised for a Breakout Spring

When the defending baseball state champion Trinity Shamrocks take the field this spring, senior Grayson Willoughby will be a top name to watch. The right-handed pitcher and power-hitting third baseman has been generating buzz ever since winning the state championship last year. Already committed to the University of Kentucky and gaining national attention, Willoughby enters his final high school season carrying expectations that few players in the state have ever shouldered. But Willoughby can use what he learned last year to handle the pressure and lead his team.

“I kind of always knew that junior and senior year are the years where you have to step up. You’re driving the bus, steering the ship. You have to take control of what’s going to happen around the field, take leadership of the guys in the locker room, on and off the field, and just set the example. If you do the right things, everyone else will follow, and that’s how the winning culture is created.”

Last summer, Willoughby helped lead the Shamrocks to a state championship while also earning Tournament MVP honors. His dominance on the mound, paired with his consistency at the plate, cemented him as one of the state’s most complete players. Willoughby pitched seven innings, striking out seven and allowing one run. He went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored the game-winning run for Trinity, which defeated PRP 2-1 in extra innings. After a stunning loss to PRP in the state semifinal the year before, Willoughby was determined not to let it happen again in the state final. “I knew after sophomore year, after we lost that game, the mindset was to not let that happen again.”

After winning the state championship in June, Willoughby got the opportunity to participate in several prestigious national events. He competed at the Team USA 18U National Team Training Camp, the 2025 Area Code Games, the Perfect Game All-American Classic, and the Under Armour All-American Game. These events gave Willoughby the chance to compete against the top players around the country. “With all of those events, you’re playing the best around the country. So, for me, it was just all about the mentality that you can’t take any pitch or rep off because they’re locked in all the time, ready to go.” Willoughby did more than hold his own in competition. “For me, I always knew that I could do these things, and I just waited for my time to come. I made sure to get the most out of every opportunity.”

Willoughby committed to the University of Kentucky early in his junior year. Coming off a College World Series appearance in 2024, Kentucky has had great success preparing players for the next level. That was something that piqued Willoughby’s interest in the program. “It goes both ways between the players and the coaching staff. They want us to get better, and we want to get better, so their goal is to help get us to the professional level, and that’ll help with playing in the SEC.”

Going into the season, Willoughby has big goals for himself. “I want to win Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year and Mr. Kentucky Baseball.” He knows those goals won’t come without a lot of hard work.

As for the team, Willoughby hopes to repeat last year’s success. “It’s senior year, so the big thing is to go out with a bang. We want to win another one and go back-to-back for the first time in Trinity baseball history.”

When it comes to his baseball future, Willoughby hopes to represent Trinity every step of the way.

“The most important thing is just to be a man of faith and character, carry what I learned here and carry that onto the next level. Just staying true to myself, knowing where you are, who you are, and where you’ve been. We have great foundations at Trinity, and it’s important to tap into that, and that will be the biggest piece of success.”
