Trinity’s track team has continued to dominate over the years, and senior Will McCauley has been a huge part of that success. Holding multiple school records, McCauley’s achievements and journey deserve recognition within the Trinity community.
McCauley didn’t start running until eighth grade at Walden, but he quickly proved himself a serious contender after breaking multiple records at Trinity. His school records include the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.87 seconds and the 100-meter dash in 10.66 seconds. He also ranks fifth all-time in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.96 seconds. These records surpass some professional athletes who attended Trinity, such as James Quick, who went on to excel in the NFL. But for McCauley, these records are only part of his identity and future goals.
He is also committed to giving back to the Trinity community, crediting the support he received as a student. “There’s a lot of freshmen and sophomores, so it’s cool to be able to teach them what I’ve learned through my four years,” McCauley said.
McCauley plans to continue his success at the collegiate level, with his top-choice school being Bellarmine University. He emphasized the role of Trinity’s staff in helping him develop his skills and gain exposure for recruitment. “The coaches have helped me a lot with getting my times out there and getting recruited,” he said. With his dedication and support from the school, his career is poised for continued success.
Trinity has also helped McCauley grow academically. “I think the biggest skill I’ve learned is time management,” he said. Balancing athletics and academics is challenging. “I have a lot of work to do, and balancing that with the time commitment of track, recovery and sleep has been the best skill I’ve learned.” He notes that daily practice is essential, but discipline outside of practice is what sets top athletes apart. “Everybody practices, but it comes down to sleep, recovery, hydration and eating well.”
Despite the competitive and sometimes critical nature of sports, McCauley stays grounded by focusing on his love for running. “My biggest motive while running is that I love running and that track is fun to me,” he said. He emphasizes work ethic and commitment over results. “If I do good, I do good, but I just focus on putting in the work and having fun.”
McCauley also has unique routines to prepare for races. “I like to eat a lot of pasta the night before the race to fuel my body,” he said. Unlike many athletes who listen to music, he prefers silence and focus. “I like to stretch and warm up without music, just listening to the noise around me and getting in the right mindset.”
Through his dedication, leadership and impact at Trinity, McCauley has built a bright future.
