Lacrosse Rocks Looking for a Three-Peat

After defeating Lexington Catholic 19-4 this past Tuesday in the season opener, and after back-to-back state championships, the Lacrosse Rocks are looking to capture their third consecutive state title. The team graduated 16 seniors last year and has almost a completely new roster. Coach Pete Schroeder, long-tenured coach, speaks on how his team is preparing and fighting for the same goal: another state championship.

The biggest obstacle heading into this season is filling the void left by 16 graduating seniors who played major roles in last year’s title run. Schroeder acknowledged that losing a large senior class means the roster will have a new identity, and new players will have to step up. There are a couple of players who have been key contributors from the past two seasons and will have to become the leaders of this team. Logan Schweitzer returns after playing a major role last season, while senior Colin Teely is also expected to take on more responsibility. On defense, three-year starter Gavin Telehany will provide stability and experience for younger teammates. Junior Lincoln Gumer, who made a significant impact last year, is also expected to be a key contributor.

Schroeder has made it clear that his teams will always have the same mission if he is the coach. “I expect us to compete for a state title.” With a younger roster, he is focusing on development and chemistry as a team. He keeps his roster smaller so all his starters get meaningful reps.

The team’s play style will shift from individual scoring to ball movement and off-ball cutting to create opportunities. Schroeder noted, “We’re not close to that level right now, but by May, if we trust our process, we expect to be in position to contend.”

The varsity Lacrosse Rocks will be taking on KCD in an away match at 2:00 p.m. this upcoming Sunday, March 8. Go Rocks, take state!
