This past weekend, I traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, to witness the annual SEC men’s basketball tournament at Bridgestone Arena. The games I attended took place Friday the 13th, featuring Kentucky vs. Florida and Vanderbilt vs. Tennessee.
The arena was packed with fans from across the SEC, with especially large groups from Kentucky, Florida and Tennessee. But you could also spot fans from Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Ole Miss and Alabama. The SEC tournament felt like a melting pot of fan bases, creating a rocking environment. Broadway was full of fans, and it’s one of the best spots to host a game.
The first game I watched was Kentucky vs. Florida, where Florida handled Kentucky from the start. The Wildcats never gave up, even after falling behind by double digits, and managed to tie it late in the first half. However, Florida’s elite frontcourt was too much to handle throughout. In a rock fight where neither team could shoot well from 3-point range, Kentucky cut it to a five-point game with less than two minutes remaining. But Florida answered, with Xavian Lee hitting a step-back 3-pointer to seal the game. The Gators won 71-63.
The second game I attended was Vanderbilt vs. Tennessee. For an in-state rivalry played at a neutral site, the hostility was constant between fans and players. Jalen Carey and Tyler Nickel went back and forth all game, and the crowd was loud and rowdy. “Rocky Top” rang out multiple times, while “VU” chants echoed throughout Bridgestone Arena. Duke Miles was the standout, scoring 30 points to lead the Commodores to a 75-68 win.
My ticket cost $50 and was in the middle-to-upper portion of the lower bowl. Around the stadium before the games, there was music and interactive activities where fans could shoot baskets and play games. A massive screen outside the arena showed the current game, and there was free food, including hot dogs and ice cream. Entry was a bit chaotic due to long lines, but once inside, it was easy to navigate and find your seat.
This was one of the louder basketball environments I’ve experienced for a neutral-site game. When Kentucky tied the game at 20-20, the arena felt ready to erupt. Each fan base had its own chants and brought strong energy. There was plenty of country music, fitting for Nashville, and the crowd sang along. “I Won’t Back Down” by Tom Petty played for Florida fans, adding to the atmosphere. Whenever the bands played their fight songs, the crowd got fully involved. Overall, Bridgestone Arena did a great job creating a fun, high-energy environment.
Overall, this feels like one of the best deals in sports, offering action-packed, competitive March basketball. Pair that with one of the most energetic environments in Music City on Broadway, and the SEC tournament stands out as one of the best events to attend.
