This past Saturday, the Tennis Tennis Rocks faced off against one of the best tennis teams in the state, The Manual Crimsons. The Shamrocks dropped four of the five courts in their tough matchup against Manual. However, one of Trinity’s doubles courts, consisting of senior team captain Josh Kepnes and sophomore Will Cameron, delivered the team’s only victory and prevented a full sweep with a hard-fought comeback win, ending the match 2-1.
After dropping the first set, Kepnes and Cameron struggled giving away easy points due to inconsistency with serving. Kepnes admitted, “We weren’t playing our best, we missed a lot of easy shots and just completely did not play with any aggression.” After falling behind in the second set as well, the Rocks turned things around. “The second set was all about really hitting volleys, getting in, and serving well,” Kepnes explained.
After that the momentum had completely shifted, by staying focused and letting the momentum and passion build, the Rocks ended the third set on winning eight points in a row to seal the victory.
Kepnes added that the victory was very satisfying. “I didn’t want to sit at all during a tie break, just let the momentum carry through, and it did. So it’s a good win.”
Despite losing the overall match 4-1, Kepnes and Cameron’s perseverance on this court showed their ability to fight back despite being down early. It was a small but significant victory in a challenging contest against Manual.
The Rocks will look to conquer Collegiate at home tomorrow.
